There’s no denying the current cost of living crisis has everyone having to forgo some things and second guess if they actually need some items.
I’ve created this list to help you on your sustainability journey using some incentives each state currently has on offer for residents/households, which I imagine should help you in some way. From saving money to getting some money back, it all adds up!
This is focused on ‘sustainable’ incentives, schemes and rebates from each state in Australia (not local councils), let me know if you want me to deep dive and go into local councils in each state as well!
Australian Capital Territory (ACT)
Sustainable home advice program
Residents in ACT can receive advice on reducing their energy bills.
Solar for Apartments Program
Apartment owners (and renters) could be eligible to receive a grant and loan to go towards the installation of solar panels.
Canberra’s Electric Bike Library
Canberra residents can try an e-bike before buying one to see if it will suit them and their lifestyle.
Sustainable household scheme
Eligible ACT homeowners can get a loan up to $15,000 to improve their homes energy efficiency.
Home Energy action kit
Residents can borrow the kit from a local library and access their energy and water usage.
Container Deposit Scheme
Residents can get 10c back on eligible containers when returned to certain depots and return points.
New South Wales (NSW)
Energy Savings Scheme (ESS)
ESS offers finical incentives to NSW residents to install energy efficient appliances and equipment.
Household energy-saving upgrades
To help NSW residents save on energy use, financial incentives are available to replace or install new energy efficient equipment (like aircon, hot water systems etc) in homes.
Return and Earn
Resident can get 10c back on eligible containers when returned to certain depot and return points.
Northern Territory (NT)
Home and Business Battery Scheme

Homeowners and businesses in NT could be eligible for grants for the installation of solar panels and batteries.
Container Deposit Scheme
Resident can get 10c back on eligible containers when returned to certain depot and return points.
Queensland (QLD)
Solar Bonus scheme
Eligible exisiting customers receive 44c per kw-hour feed-in tariff.
Containers for Change
Residents can get 10c back on eligible containers when returned to certain depots and return points.
South Australia (SA)
Incentives for Sustainability
Adelaide’s Incentives for sustainability aim to make sustainable practices and tech more accessible and affordable through cash back incentives for residents and businesses.
Energy Advisory Service
Free general advice and information on energy topics to SA residents.
Feed-in tariffs
Eligible solar-using residents could get 44c credited to their electricity account via feed-in tariffs.
Container Deposit Scheme
Resident can get 10c back on eligible containers when returned to certain depot and return points.
Tasmania (TAS)
Energy Saver Loan Scheme
0% interest loans are available to eligible residents in Tasmania to go towards purchases of energy efficient products.
Recycle Rewards

Victoria (VIC)
Shower head discounts
Residents in Victoria may be eligible for a discount on a new water-saving shower head.
Victoria energy upgrades for homes
Residents in Victoria may be eligible for discounts and/or rebates on the installation of and the purchase of equipment and appliances that save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Solar homes program
multiple rebates are available to Victorian residents to save on their energy bills and upgrade to energy-efficient appliances.

Resident can get 10c back on eligible containers when returned to certain depot and return points.
Western Australia (WA)
Waterwise Offers
The Water Corporation offer rebates to Perth metro and regional residents in Western Australia to help you save water.
Energy buy back scheme
Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme – DEBS for short, offers eligible customers in Western Australia a payment for exported electricity to the grid from solar panels, batteries and electric vehicles.
